A New Orleans jazz site where a young Louis Armstrong once worked tipped over when Ida swept through Louisiana as one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the United States

The Karnofsky Tailor Shop, where a Jewish family employed Armstrong, collapsed during the storm on Sunday. Armstrong would play a small pewter horn while working on the coal and junk cars, according to the National Park Service.

The company opened downtown in 1913 and had a residence above where the late jazz legend often dined. The family, who provided Armstrong with a “second home,” loaned him money to buy his first cone.

“Louis said it was the Karnofskys who instilled the love of singing in his heart,” retired jazz historian and photojournalist John McCusker said, according to WWL-TV.

Morris Karnofsky, Armstrong’s family son and childhood friend, opened the city’s first jazz record store on that same street, according to the park service. Armstrong would visit Morris Music on his return to New Orleans after moving.

A cluster of other sites integral to the city’s early jazz history were also located on South Rampart Street.

In 2019, a real estate company specializing in historic preservation was under contract to restore part of the block that included the Karnofsky boutique, The Times Picayune / The New Orleans Advocate reported. The CEO of the company launched the idea of transforming the building into a nightclub or jazz lounge.

But when daylight arrived on Monday morning, all that was left was a pile of bricks and other remains of the historic site.

Yes, there are bigger events than the jazz concerts across the subway this weekend, generating more ink, more hype, more COVID concerns … like the State Fair and Immersive Van Goh. But for jazz fans, it’s hard to beat the Atlantis Quartet and JazzMN Orchestra at the Black Dog and the Crooners respectively. Atlantis, now well into a second decade of collaboration between Zacc Harris, Brandon Wozniak, Chris Bates and Pete Hennig, headlines Black Dog on Steve Kenny’s unstoppable Saturday Night Jazz series; Kenny reunites a trio for the opening set. At Crooners, JazzMN crowns a two-day tribute to music led by women (“As only women can“), with singer Connie Evingson with pianist Jon Weber and longtime duo Lori Dokken and Judi Vinar on stage on Saturday, with singer Aja Parham greeting Sarah Vaughan and singer Leslie Vincent leading up to JazzMN on Sunday.

JC Sanford conducts JazzMN and adds his trombone

The JazzMN Orchestra– which includes a somewhat fluid cast of the metro area’s top jazzers – is finally entering a new era under the leadership of JC Sanford, who took over as artistic director following the resignation of longtime founding director Doug Snapp following the 2019 season. . CoVid has moved ahead of the 2020 season, JazzMN returning on stage at Crooners at the end of June for a dazzling performance with guest Bob Mintzer, as part of the “Virtual Jazz Fest” with the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. August 29e The performance in the Belvedere tent at Crooners offers Sanford an opportunity for “more creative flexibility” than is usually possible with their season of three concerts, again scheduled for the Chanhassan Dinner Theater.

Notes JC, “I just thought this would be a great opportunity to present some really fabulous composers. Initially, I thought I would only perform living composers, but decided to include a few other legends (Mary Lou Williams and Melba Liston) in addition to a few living legends (Toshiko Akiyoshi and Maria Schneider) and other artists. emerging younger. And the problem with selecting the program directory was not trying to find enough music to play, but deciding what not play, because there are so many female dynamite composers out there right now, many of whom are already pretty prolific. I could do 5 more shows like this and not repeat a songwriter. “

Composer Maria Schneider with JazzMN (2017)

The program will also include music by rising stars Asuka Kakitani (Charlie Parker Award from the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, 2006), Jihye Lee (Charlie Parker Award from the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, 2018), Ayn Inserto (acclaimed protégé of Bob Brookmeyer) and Montreal- saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen.

Look on the metro for more great music this weekend—Kenne Thomas K-Tet at Jazz Central (Saturday); Dave Hagedorn / Kevin Clement / Phil Hey at Imminent Brewing in Northfield (Saturday), Bryan nichols at the cooler (Saturday), and the Rosemont Jazz Festival with Salsa del Soul among others, at Rosemount Central Park (Sunday afternoon and evening).

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – A common bond around the love of beer was born from a historic business venture called Vine Street Brewing.

It will be the first of its kind.

“We will be the first black-owned brewery in Missouri and Kansas City,” said co-owner Kemet Coleman.

Coleman and his partners Woodie Bonds and Elliot Ivory met and connected through their interest in beer.

Woodie and Elliot have extensive brewing knowledge, while Kemet oversees the business side. With their skills, the trio created their own perfect mix.

“Between the creativity of Woodie and the consistency of Elliot and things of that nature, I think we’re probably going to have a good balance of styles that everyone will enjoy,” Coleman said.

The new business will be located inside 2000 Vine on Vine Street.

The building was established in the 1800s and once served as the headquarters of the Kansas City Street Department.

It sat vacant for years before being acquired by partners of 2000 Vine Street, LLC.

As part of the building’s renovation, Vine Street Brewing will have a tasting room, brewing space and beer garden.

2000 Vine Street will also have catering, retail and office space in the near future.

It will serve as a symbol of new life and growth in the Jazz District. Live music will also be an important element, in tune with the musical influence of Vine Street.

“I think in order for Kansas City to be at its best, Vine had to be at its best. And there are a lot of people investing in that, ”said Shomari Benton, partner of 2000 Vine Street, LLC.

According to the owners of Vine Street Brewing, their business is more than just a drink. It is about representing the local community.

“The representation of black-owned businesses is important. Just to show that we make a quality product and have control over the process that we claim to be the experts on, ”said Elliot Ivory.

The trio said their doors are open to everyone, especially those who love beer as much as they do.

“We really feel ready for this. We think we’re good enough and we think we can do something for this community that everyone can be proud of, ”said Woodie Bonds.

Vine Street Brewing is slated to open in 2022.

Lady Gaga has announced details of her upcoming “Jazz & Piano” residency in Las Vegas, including the show’s first dates in nearly two years.

Gaga announced the new dates on social media, revealing that she will once again take on the City’s Park Theater at Park MGM. She will play nine dates in October, starting on the 14th and ending on Halloween (October 31st).

Tickets for the shows are expected to go on sale at 10 a.m. PT (6 p.m. BST) on Saturday, August 28. See Gaga’s announcement below.

Gaga launched the “Jazz & Piano” residency in January 2019, shortly after starting her concurrent “Enigma” residency in December 2018. Gaga has performed both residencies regularly throughout 2019, with a multitude of dates scheduled for 2020 canceled due to COVID-19.

Lady Gaga is also set to release another collaborative jazz album with legendary Tony Bennett, titled “Love For Sale”. Released on October 1st, this will be the two artists’ second album together, after “Cheek To Cheek” from 2014.

The two performed a pair of sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City earlier this month, which would mark Bennett’s final shows as the 95-year-old announced his retirement soon after. .

“Love For Sale” will follow up on Gaga’s latest solo album, “Chromatica”, released last year. In a review of the album, NMEHannah Mylrea wrote: “On ‘Chromatica’ Gaga fully embraced creating a pure pop album.

“From uplifting melodies to positive, hopeful lyrics, ‘Chromatica’ is a celebration – and a well-deserved celebration.”

Outside of music, Gaga is set to star in Ridley Scott’s upcoming film “House Of Gucci”, alongside Adam Driver, Jared Leto and more. “House Of Gucci” hits theaters November 24.

Bis known as one of the voices of the mysterious pre-soul group Sault, Cleo Sol delivers their second solo album with little context. Three figures adorn the cover: Sol, a baby and the photo of a young woman on the wall behind. We have to assume that the three are related and that Mother, the continuation of the 2020s Pink in darkness album, talk about these relationships.

Cleopatra Zvezdana Nikolic named herself “Sol” in homage to her mother’s half-Spanish heritage; her mom’s advice was a presence on the 2019 track Sweet Blue. These 12 new songs pay more homage to support in hard times, while one of the two great eight-minute centerpieces, One Day, promises to “always be there for … my angel, born in June.” Sol is mothered, and mothering.

You suspect that this care is not limited to people who are genetically related. Sol delivers broader encouragement, analysis of formative memories, and pleas to everyone’s faith in her light tones, as producer Inflo weaves orchestral soul jazz around her. Stevie Wonder is a magnet here, but Sol sings with a relaxed, delicate intimacy that can make Mother you feel like you are getting involved in private conversations. It’s a quieter, more spacious, introverted job than Pink in darkness.

The NBA preseason schedule is expected to give the Utah Jazz some top-level testing.

Granted, no Utah Jazz team has reached the NBA Finals since the franchise’s only two appearances in 1997 and 1998, ending in losses to the Chicago Bulls.

And Salt Lake City’s latest team did little to calm doubters by turning the league’s best record into yet another playoff disaster. This time, of course, the disaster was a 2-0 advantage in the Western Conference semifinals via four straight losses to the No. 4 seed Los Angeles Clippers.

Still, depending on where you choose to search for the 2022 Finals predictions, the Jazz and defending champion Milwaukee Bucks are either favorites or among the favorites to face the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy next year.

If nothing else, however, we now know for sure that Utah’s final preseason battle in October will pit the franchise that finished No.1 in the 2020-21 NBA rankings against the franchise that ultimately won all of them. the marbles.

Strong enemy mix awaits Utah Jazz in four preseason games

The Utah Jazz preseason schedule, which the NBA revealed on Tuesday afternoon, begins with two road competitions. Both outings are against other teams in the West: the San Antonio Spurs (33-39 last regular season) at 6:30 p.m. MT on October 4, then the Dallas Mavericks (42-30) at 6 p.m. MT on October 6. .

After that quick road trip, Utah will host Zion Williamson – fingers crossed – and his New Orleans Pelicans (31-41 last season) at 7 p.m. MT on October 11 inside the Vivint Arena. . Finally, the Jazz will complete their home season prep against the Bucks (46-26) at 7 p.m. MT on October 13.

The 2021-22 NBA regular season kicks off on October 19, but there’s no way to know yet if the Jazz will be in action that day.

(CNN) – The increase in Covid-19 cases in Louisiana has led to the cancellation of the New Orleans Jazz Fest for the second year in a row, organizers announced on Sunday.

Louisiana broke its own record for multiple-day Covid-19 hospitalizations last week, with 2,421 people hospitalized with the virus on Friday. On the same day, it reported 6,116 new cases, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control.

The annual jazz festival will not take place “due to the current exponential growth of new Covid cases in New Orleans and the region and the ongoing public health emergency,” the festival said in a report. press release published on its website.

The festival, which normally takes place over two weekends in late April and early May, had been moved to October earlier this year.

Previously announced acts for this year’s Jazz Fest included the Rolling Stones, who were due to play the 2019 festival and had to cancel due to Mick Jagger’s illness. Other acts that were booked for Jazz Fest 2021 included Foo Fighters, Lizzo, and Dead and Company.

“We are now looking forward to next spring, where we will present the Festival according to its traditional period. The dates for next year are April 29 to May 8, 2022, ”the festival posted on its website.

“In the meantime, we urge everyone to follow the guidelines and protocols offered by public health officials, so that we can all soon experience the joy that is Jazz Fest,” he said.

The Jazz Fest in 2020 has also been canceled due to the pandemic.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell reintroduced a mask mandate for the city on July 30, saying, “Thanks to the Delta variant, the Covid pandemic is once again raging out of control. The mayor is also demanding that all city employees get vaccinated.

Only 37.4% of Louisiana’s population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

On August 2, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards reinstated a mask mandate for the state that went into effect Wednesday and lasts until at least September 1.

“The cheapest thing we can do to try to curb transmission and give our hospitals some breathing space is to reinstate the mask’s mandate,” he said.

Edwards said the capacity of his state hospitals was “absolutely strained.”
